Planned Parenthood of Indiana looks forward to a productive 2009 General Assembly
The Planned Parenthood Advocates of Indiana PAC would like to extend congratulations to Gov. Mitch Daniels for his successful re-election bid. We look forward to continuing a positive working relationship with the Daniels administration as well as Attorney General-Elect Greg Zoeller.
We are also pleased to continue working with our friends in the Indiana House and Senate.
The 2009 General Assembly promises to be one of the most exciting in years for reproductive rights. Indiana made a statement with its vote for Senator Barack Obama, who was endorsed by the Planned Parenthood Action Fund. It is clear that the majority of Hoosiers support comprehensive and affordable health care to all those in need.
Planned Parenthood made a statement as well. We recruited more than 10,000 Hoosiers to join Planned Parenthood of Indiana's Action Network and with that we have real momentum heading into the General Assembly session. We are ready to move forward with our Prevention First legislative package—a set of bills that will work to provide medically-accurate sex education to Indiana students and protect access to contraception.
We will work with our friends in the legislature to help move these bills forward in 2009. Stay tuned in as we celebrate the holidays and look to a New Year and new American leadership—leadership that realizes the importance of health care and choice.
Planned Parenthood Advocates PAC endorses Jill Long Thompson for governor of Indiana
The Planned Parenthood Advocates Political Action Committee is pleased to announce that we have endorsed Democratic gubernatorial candidate Jill Long Thompson in the 2008 election!
During her time in Congress, Jill's pro-choice voting record included votes in favor of family planning initiatives as well as access to safe and legal abortions. It is because of her staunch support of women's reproductive health care that she has already received endorsement from the progressive group EMILY's List and numerous pro-family planning members of the Indiana Senate and House of Representatives. We are happy to add the support of the only PAC in Indiana that focuses on reproductive health care and electing pro-family planning politicians to this fine list.
There is a lot at stake involving reproductive health issues in the 2008 elections—not only for the state of Indiana, but also for the country. Now is the time to stand up for birth control, sex education, medical privacy, and safe, legal access to abortion by supporting candidates, such as Ms. Long Thompson, who have pledged to work for women's health.
Hear John McCain's thoughts on birth control.
It certainly is an exciting time to be a Hoosier. An exit poll study showed that over 213,000 young voters turned out for the Indiana primary, accounting for 17% of all voters! There's even talk this year of Indiana becoming a blue state for the first time since 1964. What a great opportunity we have with so many Hoosiers engaged and energized about politics and the future. Let's work to keep that momentum going and pledge to elect as many pro-prevention and pro-choice politicians in Indiana as possible!
The 2008 primaries are just around the corner (May 6!), and Planned Parenthood Advocates PAC is already focusing on what we can do to help Get Out The Vote in May and for the November general elections (check out our One Million Strong campaign!).
The outcome of this election will determine the future of reproductive health—not only in the state of Indiana, but also the United States of America. Now is the time to fight for birth control, sex education, medical privacy, and safe, legal abortion access.
The state legislature and your local elected officials have greater control over your life than you may realize—some of them are actively working to limit access to contraceptives or to mandate teaching scientifically inaccurate information about sex. (Don't believe us? Check out what happened during the 2008 Indiana General Assembly.)
On the other hand, other legislators and candidates are already excited about the ideas we're proposing in our Prevention First package: common sense ideas to help reduce unintended pregnancies and increase privacy and public health. We need these legislators and candidates to make this legislation a reality, and we need YOU to help elect pro-Prevention candidates!
Lucky for us, we have the power to vote. You can register now by filling out the voter registration form and getting more information here. Not sure who to vote for? Take a look at Indiana’s state legislative voting records on reproductive issues from the 2008 legislative session and earlier. Need info on federal candidates? Vote as if your life depends on it–because it does
The outcome of the general election on November 7, 2006 will determine the future of reproductive health in the state of Indiana. Birth control is at stake. Sex education is at stake. Medical privacy is at stake. Safe, legal abortion access is at stake.
The state legislature and even your local elected officials have greater control over your life than you may realize--some of them are actively working to make it harder to get contraceptives or teach medically accurate information about sex. (Don't believe us? Check out last session's legislative summary.) On the other hand, other legislators and candidates are already excited about the ideas we're proposing in our Prevention Now campaign–common sense ideas to help reduce unintended pregnancies and increase privacy and public health.
You're voting not just for the candidates, you're voting to retain control over your own body. To help demonstrate our point, we've created a few animated scenes to illustrate the issues. Click the thumbnails below to see.
You can find lots more information–and other cool new multimedia stuff, including a video series–at our sister site, Planned Parenthood Advocates of Indiana. Be sure to mark your calendar for the Prevention Now rally on February 8–because Election Day is only the beginning!
